Recommended DFM Review for Robot Parts CNC Machining Manufacturers: Four Cost Reduction Strategies

Times

In the entire process of developing and producing robot components, a lot of cost waste is not generated in the machining stage, but in the hidden dangers already buried in the drawing design stage. Unreasonable tolerances, complex and difficult to machine features, and excessive material selection can all increase the overall cost of precision part machining. DFM manufacturability review is the process of optimizing and adjusting drawings based on manufacturing processes before formal production, in order to reduce overall costs without compromising product functionality. As a CNC machining manufacturer of robot parts, Shenzhen Huiwen Zhizao combines a large number of practical robot structural component machining to summarize four cost reduction strategies and assist customers in cost control of CNC aluminum alloy machining.

1、 Layered tolerance setting, rejecting strict tolerance requirements for the entire drawing

Many R&D engineers, for the sake of safety, uniformly label the entire drawing of robot components with ultra-high precision tolerances. Whether it is the assembly and fitting key surfaces or the non functional appearance surfaces, strict standards are adopted, directly increasing the processing time and scrap rate of precision parts. The first cost reduction strategy for DFM review is to control tolerances in layers: only retaining high precision for core functional positions such as bearing holes, locating pin holes, and assembly reference surfaces; Non matching avoidance grooves, exterior chamfers, and non critical contours can be relaxed to industry standard tolerances.

Carrying out robot structural component processing, especially in CNC aluminum alloy processing, excessively tight tolerances will increase the workload of repeated adjustments and inspections. For example, the external decorative surface of the robot shell does not require assembly interaction and does not require micrometer level tolerances. Distinguishing between critical and non critical dimensions does not weaken product performance, but can significantly reduce processing difficulty, minimize defective scrap, and achieve effective cost reduction.

2、 Optimize structural features and reduce design defects that are difficult to process

Many drawings have features such as extremely small inner corners, deep narrow cavities, and isolated extremely thin walls. These structures require micro cutting tools, multiple layered cutting, low processing efficiency, and are prone to tool breakage and part deformation, which increases production costs. Rationalizing and optimizing structural features during the DFM review stage is a cost-effective cost reduction method. For CNC aluminum alloy processing, under the premise of non-interference in assembly, the inner cavity corners should be appropriately enlarged to avoid extremely small R angles; For deep and narrow cavities, adjusting the aspect ratio of the cavity and using standard cutting tools can complete the machining, avoiding additional costs caused by customizing special cutting tools.

In the process of robot structural component processing, isolated thin walls are high-frequency risk points. If the product allows, adding reinforcing ribs and moderately increasing local wall thickness can reduce processing deformation and improve yield. Precision parts machining is not about completely modifying product functionality, but about improving manufacturing friendliness, simplifying machining paths, and shortening machining hours.

3、 Scientifically matching material selection to avoid excessive material performance

Choosing the wrong materials is a cost trap that is easily overlooked in robot component projects. Some designers choose high-strength and expensive aluminum alloys regardless of working conditions, and static non stress shells also use 7075 aluminum alloys, resulting in unnecessary increases in material costs. During DFM review, the material should be matched based on the actual stress conditions of the parts. For joint shells that can withstand alternating loads and high-frequency movements, 7075 aluminum alloy can be selected; For ordinary static racks, casings, and protective structural components, 6061 aluminum alloy with higher cost-effectiveness is preferred, resulting in lower material procurement costs and more stable cutting performance.

The selection of materials should also take into account the subsequent surface treatment. The anodizing effect of different grades of aluminum alloys varies. If the parts need a uniform and beautiful appearance, the DFM review stage should simultaneously evaluate the compatibility of the material and post-processing to avoid the scrapping of the entire set of parts due to unqualified surface treatment after processing.

4、 Coordinate post-processing and assembly to avoid secondary rework costs in advance

Many projects treat machining, surface treatment, and assembly completely separately, with drawings only indicating the dimensions of machined products, ignoring the increase in film thickness caused by anodizing and electroplating. After machining is completed, it is discovered that the matching hole size is offset, and secondary hole repair is necessary, resulting in additional rework costs. This is also a major source of project cost waste.

DFM review is not just about looking at machining, it requires incorporating post-processing techniques into the overall evaluation. If the parts need to be anodized later, a film thickness compensation allowance needs to be reserved for the key matching holes. For the processing of robot structural components, synchronize the assembly logic, check the direction of hole positions and clamping interference, and minimize secondary machining during subsequent assembly.

For precision parts processing projects, DFM review will also distinguish between sampling and batch production. Small batches can accept some high cost features. If production needs to be increased in the later stage, friendly modifications should be made to the drawings in advance to prevent the sampling drawings from being directly put into mass production and causing cost control.
